How do I connect my house floodlights to a motion sensor (intruder deterrent)?

My house is in the country, no streetlights. We have unfortunately had a few unwanted visits after dark. How do we connect our floodlights to a motion sensor, so the grounds will be lit up as soon as he approaches? We already have the floodlights, but at the moment they are operated by a switch.
