The problem is two fold. When the opener starters it pulls a lot of power for a fraction of a second and then surges in to the bulb. The second is filament shock from the vibration. The solution is to install a power saving bulb that has florescence cool bulb technology but looks and shape like a regular bulb and well last about 5 years.
I tried a compact fluoroescent in my 1/2 HP Chamberlain. It wouldn’t work AT ALL. I think the big white base contacted fixture too soon, not allowing the center of the bulb to make contact with the juice.
The vibration is killing the bulbs. Use a compact fluorescent bulb instead.
You need to use rough service bulbs, like the ones in trouble lites. The garage door opener shakes causing household bulbs to burn out
They make vibration resistant bulbs specifically for garage door openers. They are available at just about any home center or hardware store.
I think compact fluorescent are great but not in every application.
From the GE web site:
"Can I use a CFL in applications involving vibration such as a ceiling fan or garage door opener?"
"Generally it is not recommended to use CFLs in vibrating environments. Vibration can cause the electronics in the CFL to fail. There is one CFL bulb (FLE11) that is available for use in a ceiling fan. Check the package for this application."
