Where is the best place to mount a humidifier, on supply or return duct? Or does it not matter?
Thanks for any info.
Is it best to mount a humidifier on the supply or return duct? Does it matter? The furnace is a high efficiency model, 2yrs old & has an Air Bear media filter.
Thanks for any info.

depends on type of humidifier..if its the type that uses a bypass duct for its airflow then it doesnt matter…..if its the type that has its own fan built in then it needs to go on the supply duct……also refer to instruction manual for the water connection…i assume its the type that has fresh water flowing through it while its on,no sump with recirculated room temp water…if you have a heat pump then you need to connect to hot water…if gas furnace ,hot water prefereable but cold will work…if oil heat , cold water should be ok…also be sure to wire it so it only runs when the furnace blower is on,,and be sure to mount the humidistat per the install instructions……..dan
April Aire will allow either the return or supply, must be done to instructions as Dan pointed out. One school of thought is to mount to the return, when applicable, because an unserviced humidifier can do a lot of damage to a furnace, should a leak go undetected.
Note: Humidifiers do not have to be mounted to the supply, read the instructions. I have personaly installed dozens on the return side, per instructions, with wonderful results and have been doing so for over twenty years.
ALL humidifiers need to be on the forced air side of a furnace, no matter what type of furnace you have. the water supply is not important. hot or cold doesnt matter.
some are fan forced and some are circulation. just try to put the unit above your furnace, in the air duct and then hook it up as per the directions.
fan units are easier to install and air circulation units need to have return air ducts put on to allow the air to flow.
