My nice Samsung HT-X20 home theatre show "protection" and shut itself off.I contacted Samsung and they say it needs service.I never before heard of a radio going for service. What do they actually do at the service? What are they replacing?

The protection means the amp detects a short or open and will not work. This auto off feature means the output section is damaged. I have seen this particular model having a lot of failures lately. More than likely the have a faulty component, they also probably have a good idea of what serial numbers this falls under. Did they ask for that?
Also try to disconnect everything first and see if the protection warning is still there. If not you have a short or open in something else.
