7 y/o female Golden anxiety/mental issues?
My female Golden has always been a nervous dog; she is fine at home and with people she knows, but if we take her on a walk, some things (like stacked bales of hay, etc.) that she is unfamiliar with frighten her, as do people (especially groups) whom she also barks/growls at (she won’t attack, she tries to run away).
We’ve had problems in our house with the fire alarms going off several times (they rewired them incorrectly) and it takes awhile to get the ladder out to turn them off. This terrifies her, and it bothers our male Golden. Both dogs are understandably jumpy at high pitched noise now, but she is getting worse and worse even though they haven’t gone off in a while. She is now terrified of storms (she jumps into our laps trembling when even a mild one come in) and and any noise on TV that even remotely sounds like an alarm perks her right up. She was shaking when I went outside the other day to meet with my neighbors, and we think she’s now afraid of the crickets’s noise, as she is very nervous during the night and wakes up us, hyper, shaking, and whining.
We have recently put her on Clomipramine, and anti-anxiety med, and it seems to help a little bit. Anyone know what else we can do?
If it matters, she is also very attached to dirty socks of mine. If she doesn’t have one, she frantically "takes" us to the laundry room so that she can get one. She is very possesive of them; she will hunch over them if we try to come near hear, although she lets us take them.
